trump caused
controversy when he stated the following during a campaign rally in Iowa: I
could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue
and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose
voters. The comment was part of a larger point trump was making about the
loyalty of his voting base.
What triggered the
most outrage was trump's lashing out Sunday at four non-white Democratic women
members of Congress. He wrote on Twitter that they should leave the United
States and go back to the countries "from which they came." The four
legislators have tangled with trump before.
trump did not name them specifically but it seemed clear he was talking about freshman Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts. All are American citizens and only one, Omar, was born outside the United States, in Somalia. The other three were born in the United States.

trump wrote,
"So interesting to see 'Progressive' Democrat Congresswomen, who
originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total
catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world
(if they even have a
functioning government at all),
now loudly and
viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most
powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run.… Why don't they go
back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they
came?"
